The idea for SAFE grew out of the experience of Dr. Lee G. Burchinal, a U.S government official, who began teaching at Ahfad University (AUW) in 1983. He quickly discovered that Sudan’s educational institutions need assistance and support to obtain basic educational materials.

Putting the need for educational materials in Sudan together with the probability of obtaining these materials from U.S. organizations and individuals, Dr. Burchinal and Professor Yusuf Badri, president of AUW agreed that Dr. Burchinal should establish a non-profit organization in the United States for collecting and sending donated materials to Sudanese colleges and universities.

SAFE  has since partnered with Ahfad University and Babikir Badri’s Scientific Association for Women Studies (BBSAWS), in their mission to elevate the status of women and children in Sudan and to empower educational institutions.

However, SAFE’s work is not limited to its partners, it includes several other educational and non-profit organizations throughout Sudan (SAFE is a voluntary, non-political, non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO), established in 1985 under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Act.)

  • SAFE is dedicated to elevating the status of women and children, empowering youth and providing support for marginalized societies. In addition, SAFE works for developing a peaceful society that can provide the best quality of life for the peoples of Sudan.

  • For more than 29 years, SAFE has been on a mission to assist in providing the support and tools needed to educate women and children in Sudan and South Sudan.

  • SAFE’s new mission is to expand on its previous work and on its partnership with AUW and Babiker Badri Scientific Association for Women's Studies to empower Women, Children and Youth.

  • Developing and promoting creative solutions to problems that challenge and impede social and educational development; supporting professional educational institutions and other non-profit organizations; promoting community outreach programs; and strengthening information technology resources
