Welcome to
SAFE
Southern Sudan Educational Initiative
We are now accumulating books and educational
materials and supplies for delivery to schools, colleges, and universities
in the southern region of Sudan, beginning in 2008. Our plans are
flexible. What we will do will depend on the kinds of financial
and logistical support we attract. We ask individuals and organizations
that may want to join in or to help support the Southern Sudan Educational
Initiative to contact us.
Outstanding Contributors Honored
Four outstanding contributors to SAFE were honored at the 2007
SAFE Recognition and Fund Raising Dinner on December 9. President
Ismail Abdalla, College of William and Mary, presented an award
to Osman Alnafaidy, the outgoing SAFE president, for his years of
“relentless service and contributions to SAFE.” President
Ismail also recognized Amin Elnefeidi, president of Gandala
International, Mesa, AZ, for his very substantial financial
support of SAFE and for providing gratis transport of shipments
from Port Sudan to Omdurman, Sudan, for subsequent distribution
among academic and public libraries. The latter service has greatly
aided in delivering books to libraries that need them.
Dr. Lee Burchinal, executive director of SAFE, recognized Dr. John
Voll, Georgetown University, and a retiring SAFE director, for his
years of service and consistent, generous financial support of SAFE.
In recognition for his substantial contribution to SAFE in 2007,
Dr. Burchinal presented Mr. Sumter Brawley, with a copy of the handsomely
illustrated book, Sudan: The Land And The People, prepared
by Ambassador Timothy Carney and his wife, Victoria Butler.
Attendees also enjoyed a Sudanese dinner and had an opportunity
to learn about and discuss SAFE’s accomplishments and plans
for 2008.
President Ismail also thanked the Sudanese-American
Community Development Organization (SACDO) for providing
a gratis location for the 2007 dinner party, as it did for the dinner
party in 2006
